The first line of the passage: "Prevailing scholarly opinion holds that modern science began with the great achievements of the scientific revolution...."

So the passage is about how modern science began, or about its origins.

Good question. Towards the end of the passage we get this line: The one important ingredient of modern science that was missing prior to the 16th century was the widespread use of experiments...

The implication is that experimentation is one of several important ingredients, rather than being the single crucial factor.

Hi,

This is a second question for this RC passage - Main Idea.

I found this one to be a tricky question. I got it wrong on the exam.

During analysis, I tried to understand how option choice A is correct.

OA A

Request experts to kindly clarify if my understanding is correct.

@GMATGuruNY

Here is my analysis.

Structure of the passage
  1. Passage begins with stating the prevailing scholarly opinion - Modern Science began with great achievements of scientific revolution of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries
  1. Author states alternate opinion - a kind disagrees with the prevailing opinion - Modern Science should not, however, be identified with any particular set of achievements.
  1. Author further elaborates the point - how modern science should be identified - and states that many important elements of this approach was already in place.
  1. Towards the end, authors states that one important aspect of modern science was missing prior to sixteenth century. The scientific revolution began when scientists started using the experiments.
So in a way author agrees with the prevailing scholarly opinion that modern science began in sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but disagrees on the point when did it began. According to author it began when there was a change in the approach in the study of nature - when scientists started to use experiments.

Author agreed with a part of prevailing scholarly opinion - qualified the scholarly view point.
