18. A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
(A) beating in unison and adopting
(B) they beat in unison while adopting
(C) beat in unison, and adopt
(D) beating in unison yet adopting
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt
I marked the answer as C (Parallel Construction). However the correct answer is D - Any ideas why? I think D changes meaning of the sentence when it says ...'yet adopting...'
Thanks,

Hi,
The sentence is trying to show a peculiar feature. So there is a contrast needed as shown in D.

Option A'beating in Unison is an attribute of the heart, but there's an exclusiveness to show how they are independent of each other, so to juxtapose these two exclusive act an adverb should be used to connect the two-clause e.g YEt
Thus, this option is not correct.
Option B
' while' is a conjuction for connecting two clauses but that is not an enough here.
Option C.
This option suffers the same fate as the option as A above therefore it's incorrect.
Option D.
This is the correct answer.
'Beating' to show a present participle action of the heartbeat.
'yet' to connect the two actions that are independent of each other.
Option E.
Incorrect Parallelism
