What do you think about my essay

The following appeared as part of an editorial in a campus newspaper:

"With an increasing demand for highly skilled workers, this nation will soon face a serious labor shortage. New positions in technical and professional occupations are increasing rapidly, while at the same time the total labor force is growing slowly. Moreover, the government is proposing to cut funds for aid to education in the near future."

The editorial in the campus newspaper states that with the increase in demand for highly skilled workers, the nation will soon face a serious labor shortage. However this is not supported by strong facts or examples that are followed in the editorial.

Firstly, it is not mentioned where this demand of highly skilled workers is, is it in the nation or internationally. Correspondingly, the labor force in the nation will be affected by this, how? If high skill worker demand is increasing, how does this affect the labor shortage? What kind of skilled workers is the campus newspaper talking about? Is he referring to the existing pool of labor which will face a shortage in case there is increase in demand? how is the author not considering more people joining the labor force? Will people stop applying for the position of highly skilled workers if there is high demand for them? On what basis was this assumption taken into account? None of this is mentioned in the text.

Secondly, it is stated that there is an increase in new positions opening in the technical and professional occupations, but which new positions are these? It is not mentioned. Are these for highly skilled workers, labor or managers? It is not specified. Meanwhile, he says that total labor force is growing slowly, but he does not specify as compared to which rate? the rate of the demand? or the rate of hiring? What is this rate in numbers or in percentage? If the labor force (even though its slow) is growing, how is the author saying that the nation will face a labor shortage? The correlation is missing.

Lastly, the author says that the government is proposing to cut funds for aid to education in the near future - this is vague as none of the information is mentioned like - when will this proposal be finalized, what amount of funds is the government cutting from the aid, what is the amount of total aid. Also, how does this affect the labor shortage? If the government is cutting funds for aid to education, is it cutting aid to learning special skills also? Even if it is, how does it affect the people learning special skills. The special skills which the labor might need to learn in case they are looking for a job which will be increasing in the near future.

Since the auhor does not mention any of the above reasons, or important facts on which his statements are made, or even any findings that might help support his statement, it is difficult to say that the increasing demand of highly skilled labor will have any effect on labor shortage.
