New theories propose that catastrophic impacts of asteroids and comets may have caused reversals in the Earth's magnetic field, the onset of ice ages, splitting apart continents 80 million years ago, and great volcanic eruptions.

This is about parallelism. We have list of nouns.
They are reversals, onset, and eruptions.
We need an answer that is noun.

(A) splitting apart continents
Splitting is participle. Eliminate.

(B) the splitting apart of continents
the (adjective) splitting (gerund)
Correct answer

(C) split apart continents
Verb. Eliminate.
(D) continents split apart
Noun and verb. Eliminate.
(E) continents that were split apart
Clause. Eliminate.

Only option that is left is B!

Found throughout Central and South America, sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and sleep fifteen hours a day, moving infrequently enough that two species of algae grow on its coat and between its toes.

Its is singular. So, we need sloth in the sentence not sloths.
Eliminate A, B, and C.

(A) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and sleep fifteen hours a day, moving infrequently enough
(B) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs, they sleep fifteen hours a day, and with such infrequent movements
(C) sloths use their long rubbery limbs to hang from trees, sleep fifteen hours a day, and move so infrequently

(D) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery limbs, sleeping fifteen hours a day and moving so infrequently

hangs(verb)..., sleeping (participle)...and moving (participle)
Not parallel. Eliminate.

(E) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery limbs, sleeps fifteen hours a day, and it moves infrequently enough

hangs(verb)..., sleeps(verb), and moves (verb)
Correct answer!

@sparkles3144: your answer is right for 1st question but for this question you are wrong.
The correct answer is D.
The sloth agrees with its; the construction moving so x that y is properly used in this sentence.
In E Hangs ... sleeps ... it moves is not a parallel construction; infrequently enough that is not a
correct idiom.
