In other words 181 is what percent greater than 79?

Aside: We can think of percent greater than and percent increase as the same:
So, percent greater than = (100)(bigger value - smaller value)/(smaller value)
= (100)(181 - 79)/(79)
= (100)(102/79)
Since the answer choices are relatively spread apart, we can use a little bit of approximation to get:
≈(100)(100/80)
≈(100)(5/4)
≈(100)(1.25)
≈125

Answer: D

Using the formula (New - Old)/Old x 100, we can set up the following expression:

(181,000 - 79,000)/79,000 x 100

Estimating, we have:

(180,000 - 80,000)/80,000 x 100

100,000/80,000 x 100

10/8 x 100 = 5/4 x 100 = 125%

Answer: D
