Hi

Could you please evaluate my profile and help in determining if my school list seems in line with my profile or not?

GMAT: 750 AWA 6
Degrees:
1. Masters in Engineering Management from Duke University (2008 - right after completing my undergraduate) GPA 3.77
2. Bachelor in Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering (Top 10 in India) in Electronics (2007) - 75% (first class)
Work Experience:
Since July 2008 to date at BlackRock Financial Management (World's largest asset manager with $3.5 trillion Assets under management) New York, USA - Product Manager for BlackRock's proprietory Investment Accounting Software (its a unique company as it creates its own software platform and sells it as a service to other large asset management and insurance firms). In addition, recently promoted to Vice President - have quick progression from being an Analyst when I started in 2008 to Associate in end of 2009 and now VP (average time taken for peers is atleast 5 years).
Why MBA:
Want to move out of Financial Sector and into High Tech. Current role is Product Management but at a low scale since Financial Sector is a niche domain with a limited 'user' base. So, want to work in a high tech firm where Product Management is at a much large scale (more challenging) and is at the heart of the firm's revenue source.
Type of MBA:
Since I have a 9 month Masters already that covered sort of MBA 101 courses, preferring to focus on 1 year programs. In addition, I am a UK citizen so looking for schools in Europe (location change).
Schools shortlisted so far (need to narrow down to probably 5-6):
INSEAD, Cambridge (Judge), London Business School, Oxford (Said), IMD Switzerland, MIT Sloan, Berkeley Haas, Chicago Booth, Imperial College of London, Rotterdam School of Management
Other information:
Have completed internships during undergraduate in Philippines, Netherlands. Attended conferences in Singapore, Stanford. Currently, work very closely with business users in EMEA every day. Have traveled to London and Edinburgh for work. Have good extra curricular activities from Duke as well.

Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Vidhan

Dude!!!
You want to move OUT of finance and INTO High Tech?? Wow! It's almost always the other way around.
:)
Normally I would say "just go with your industry" but you got that nice Masters to back you up, and make the AdCom believe that your proposed goals are the "REAL DEAL"

Your school list is a good one, and I think with your GMAT, fast=paced career advancement and all the rest, you can make it. You could add HEC Paris, if it appeals to you. It's an excellent program.
Other than that, all you gotta do is apply. With the best application you can make, of course ;)

Hi Jon

Thanks for the wonderful encouragement. Its very reassuring :)

Regarding HEC Paris, I know its a great school, but I am looking for schools that have a wide global brand recognition. Main reason for this is that I want to have my options open on where I finally settle down - for egs. An LBS, INSEAD or MIT will certainly be well known in India but not HEC Paris (I maybe wrong here though). I am a dual citizen (UK & India) and am currently in US. So, my goal is to get an MBA from a school that is recognized very well all across US, Europe and India, henceforth, giving me the option to apply for jobs in different geographical markets later on. Do let me know if you think otherwise.

Based on your expertise, how would you categorize the list of schools I have selected into 'ambitious','medium' and 'safe'? (feel free to add any other schools that you think would fit well and I should research into)

Thanks a ton for your help.

On a totally rough estimate ( we need more precise info to do this right.. but let's go roughly)
let's call
IMD, Sloan, Booth ambitious
LBS, Haas, SAID competitive
RSM, Judge, Imperial good.

For LBS though (and maybe Booth too) it might make more sense for you to stick with your current industry, given their fame and connections in the finance world.

Thanks Jon. This categorization is helpful. I too was thinking on similar lines, although I thought of LBS as ambitious. Also, you did not include INSEAD here. Where do you think it fits in?

I am thinking of dropping IMD, as after doing more research, it doesn't seem to have a school culture that fits well. Their learning environment and type of students (esp. high amount of work exp.) do not seem to constitute the kind of experience I am looking to get. Instead, I am considering to apply to Kellogg, so researching it now.

I am starting the process of writing my essays. So, will submit the same for a free consultation via the link you provided.

Thanks again.

Wonderful.
Yeah I guess LBS could also fit in ambitious. Let's call it somewhere in between :)
INSEAD would be solidly in the competitive section I feel.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
