The correct answer is A. But I don't agree with it because I think the 'the' used in the answer choice is not proper.

I believe the 'the' is required there because you are refering a specific set of 500 hundred slaves with a quality: they were legally considered property. If you omitted the 'the' in the sentence it would alter the meaning of the text.
