How I view scope

by beatthegmat » Mon Apr 10, 2006 9:10 pm
Scope was a difficult concept for me as well when I was preparing for the GMAT. Essentially, it is the narrowing of the topic.

For example, let's say you had a reading comprehension passage about astronauts traveling to Mars in the future. The topic could be very broad, and in this case it could be: space travel. The scope, which is the narrowing of the topic, would be something like: logistics of a manned-mission to Mars by the year 2015.

Therefore, scope is a very specific aspect of a topic.

Topic = general
Scope = specific

I hope this explanation helps. Do other people wish to weigh in their thoughts?

I think that was a good answer from Eric.
To add to that, Scope is specifically important in CR questions, Process of Elimination technique should consider the scope to find out wrong answers.

Basically, the CR argument or a RC passage content is the ONLY information available to you to answer the question. If you are thinking outside, you are going out of SCOPE.
