General question

by ketkoag » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:35 am
Is │x│=│y│?
(1) x -y = 6
(2) x +y = 0

Here i took statement 2 and put x = -y in the equation │x│=│y│ and thus solved it. Is there any other method to do that??

Pick #s.

(2) x+y=0 -->x=-y
x=4, y=-4 |x=|y|

Because x=-y nomatter what x is positive or negative |x|=|y|

If we add the two equations, we get x = 6. If we put that back into equation (1) we get 6-y=0 -> y=0. however if we put it back into equation (2) we get 6+y=0 -> y=-6.

What am I missing?
