Experience/Personal Attributes/Leadership Qualities/Academics:
I started working with an IT company immediately after my graduation. I was selected from campus. At the beginning, I was designated as an associate professional as a junior Project Control Analyst in my team. We function as PMO staff for the Australian entity of our company. I climbed the ladder quite quickly and was assigned as the India staff lead in 2012. In this position, I looked after the work assignments and knowledge management of the India staff. I was also responsible for assisting PMs in running and maintaining their projects on the company's project management tool, maintenance of this tool and conducting trainings for the staff. In 2013, our PMO underwent a major transition in which two major entities (Asia and Australia) of the company merged to form a Global PMO. At this time I was looking for more challenges and decided to apply for the PMO Lead role. My manager warned me that this position was going to be very challenging and may be out of reach for me because it entailed working in a completely different setting with stakeholders who were all senior managers and directors and because I would have to lead staff from different countries. She even gave me a week's time to think about it! I held on to my grit and applied. My application was accepted by the director! Shortly after, I planned and executed the transition and transformation of our PMO Services. I also led some reporting services and implemented project performance and other metrices for project evaluation. Personally, I think this has been the most rewarding and brave decision in my career so far. It has been a challenging role that made me more confident and empowered me. I ensure process compliance, perform process improvement and optimization of staff utilization. Now I lead a team spread across continents. Since then I have lead and managed core PMO services and staff.

In 2013, I was also involved in a Teach India campaign to Empower young and old adults with English to acquire better job opportunities. This experience had a major impact on me personally.

In school
, I participated in several debates and elocution competitions, and even won several events. I was also on the editorial board of the school magazine. I am two-time recipient of the school all-rounder award and a general proficiency award recipient for 9 consecutive years. I was also a high school topper and school captain. Moreover, I was an active member of the environmental and social services club.

Class 10: 93.2% (CBSE, India)
Class 12: 83.2% (CBSE, India)

In college
, I completed a very crucial project in a government Defence equipment cooperation during my summer internship. In my final year, I collaborated with a team of 3 students and built a robust project which was extensive in areas of: scope, expense and technology. This project was selected for an inter-university level competition.
4-year aggregate: 75.2% (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi)

Post MBA
, I want to work in consulting and strategy in the High Tech Industry. The fields of product management, sales, brand management and product strategy excite me.

I plan to apply to the following schools (all R1):

1) Cornell University (Johnson)
2) University of Virginia (Darden)
3) Michigan Ross
4) UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School
5) UCLA Anderson

What do you think?

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. You have a lot of strong points to your profile, including:

-solid GMAT & academics
-respectable work experience; evidenced analytical & project management skills; experience as a senior team lead; experience managing others in other countries
-the way you did push out of your comfort zone for your current role
-the Teach India experience shows commitment to the community
-sounds like strong communication & presentation skills
-schools do appreciate strong female applicants

Probably the only 'down side' so to speak is just that there are are lot of technical Indian applicants, so you always want to try to stand out from that crowd, so emphasize your leadership role and how you went after it; and other aspects you feel make you unique.

With strong essays/applications/recommendations, I would hope you could be considered at many of the programs on your list.

Good luck on the process and keep us posted!

Hi Aditi_r
I saw that you'll be applying to Johnson at Cornell? I'm thrilled to hear this. I'm an assistant director with the Johnson admissions team and would be happy to help answer your questions and provide some insight on your application. Have you decided which program is a right fit for you? From your post-MBA interest, it seems that the Cornell one-year MBA in Ithaca or the Johnson Tech Cornell MBA are both great options. Let me know if you need any assistance. You can reach me via email at [email protected]. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Aditi

I agree with Jennifer. You have some very strong points in your profile which you can use to your advantage.

Also in the process please do not forget the importance of establishing solid after MBA career goals. Carefully look into the domains you would want to work with and what kind of skills are you going to gain from a MBA program towards the same.

You mentioned Consulting and Strategy in High Tech Industry, make sure you have done some prior research on the kind of work and the kind of companies you would like to work with.

I am sure with the right tone to your application you will be able to make it to the programs which are there on your list.

The schools you mentioned look good and you might want to consider some others as well like:

1. University of Wisconsin-Madison
2. Georgetown University
3. Duke University
4. Emory University

Good Luck!

Regards
