Topic "Democracy is far more cumbersome form of government than dictatorship"

Choosing a form of government that is best for the populace of a country has long been a topic of debate at the world stage. After the second world war, the British empire lost a lot of its colonies to independence movements, fuelled by a growing desire among the residents of those colonies to have a government run by their own people and a growing demand to have a say in the affairs of the country. Many of the newly independent countries adopted a democratic government, while some were led by autocratic leaders who were instrumental in the independence movement. An example of country that adopted a democratic government is India, while many countries in middle east region like Syria fell into the hands of autocratic rulers. Today on the world stage, most of the international institutions, committees are dominated by grouping of democratic countries. So a democratic government might seem a bit cumbersome but it is still a better option than dictatorship.

While an autocratic government is run by a dictator with most or all of the power concentrated in the hands of a single person, a democratic is usually run by representatives elected by the people through an election process. Power is not concentrated in the hands of a single person in democracies and the people have the option to choose a different government if they are not satisfied with the current government. Civil liberties are also more respected in democracies, while dictatorships won’t tolerate any kind of dissent against the leader as that may threaten his/her rule. For example in North Korea, which is a dictatorship, people are not allowed to say anything the leader, while in the US people are free to express their dissent against the government.

The curbing of dissent and people having less say in how are governed also effects the innovation and technological advancement of a country. Curbing of dissent also results in some very constructive ideas being suppressed because they are the against or critical of the ruling establishment. It can be seen that countries having a democratic government are technologically advanced and more innovations emerge from these countries as compared to countries with a dictatorship. Since people can voice their dissent and are free to challenge existing ways, these countries are usually more innovative. An example of a democratic country flourishing due to its values is the US , while many countries of the middle east lag behind in technological innovation.

While I consider democracy to be a better form of governance, it is not say that democracies are without their flaws. No form of governance is perfect and democratic governments also have their drawbacks. One of the pain points of democracies are the bureaucratic delays and over complexity of processes. Due to everyone having a say, sometimes processes take too much time, which is not a problem in dictatorships. Bureaucratic red tapes are also a problem in democracies as they result in delays and cost overruns in many projects.

In sum, while democracy may have its flaws and shortcomings , and processes can take a bit long, it is still a people’s government where the citizens have a say in how things happen and how they wish to be governed. So democracy is still a better form of government than dictatorship.
