It has to "as...." because the first part of teh sentence is a clause and the author is trying to create a comparitive similarity...

The OA is E.
(B) for example, the 1992 Olympic Games were financially successful
Is the Option B not correct because of the use of were in the place where was is needed?

yes, "the Olympic games" is considered singular so the verb # must be singular. (has)
E looks to be correct because any example must use "such as", or I assume in this question, "as"

It should be E.
AS is a conjunction connecting the two sentences and the verb should be present, as it is the success that is being discussed and not the games itself.

IMO E
A. Not good construction after the comma. There is a need of a connector.
B. I don't think that "for example" between commas is the best connector between the 2 phrases.
C. "Like" is used to compare people not things. For things use "as".
D. This sentence gives the idea that the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrate the fiscal disasters, but after the comma the modifier contradicts that idea.
E. The correct answer for me. "As" used properly. There is a clear meaning through the sentence.

IMO E and that's the correct answer
@arorag: Request you to to refrain from posting a subject line as a possible hint of solution. In this particular example I had a clue from subject line that an answer with 'as' will be correct.
Thanks,
Sid
