USC.PM or Kelley

by victoryk » Mon Jan 30, 2012 5:30 pm
Hello,

I have received admission for the USC.PM (part time) and Kelley full-time programs. I initially applied for the part-time program at USC for financial reasons, after submission I wanted to switch my application to the full-time program but was too late.

I have been in public accounting for 6 years, wanting to transition into corporate finance. I doubt if I tell my current employer I am obtaining an MBA they would provide any assistance. I realize full time programs are the way to go if you are switching companies, but am having second thoughts. I ultimately want to stay in CA and from what I hear, regardless of being in the part time program at USC, the network in CA will give me access to more opportunities than Indiana, Kelley would.

Any input would help

Thanks!

Dear ajnagdev,

Congratulations on your admission offers from two great programs! A tough choice...

I think it comes down to which program you feel is the best match for you and your goals, which one will best meet your expectations. While it is tough to make a career change during/immediately after a part-time MBA, it is not impossible. It simply means your expectations must be adjusted that you might not find that right opportunity until 6-12 months after you graduate. The reason being that you don't have much time left for a job search between working and business school. Having said that, it doesn't mean you won't be one of the fortunate ones who does find that opportunity near graduation. I encourage you to make a list of what you are wanting from your MBA experience--coursework, culture, industry connections, programs, resources, etc. Then, prioritize the list so you know what is most important to you. From there, you can evaluate each program against your list to see if one comes out as the better choice. Don't discount the importance of geography or your instincts...but don't think you can't return to CA from IU either. It just might take more effort on your part.

Good luck!
Lisa
