Q: Can we refer to a possessive noun by a possessive pronoun?

for e.g. The public's opinion lie in its inherent misconception about the judgment.

possessive pronouns can refer possessive nouns...
but in the sentence you provided the problem is that it can refer to public as well as opinion...
A better example will
Katy's purse contains her ID...
