TOEFL score for HBS

by hoffman » Fri May 07, 2010 6:36 am
Hello,

I just received my TOEFL score:
Total: 107
Reading: 27
Listening: 29
Speaking: 23
Writing: 28

I am applying to the HBS 2+2 program and they state that they discourage student with lower than 109 to apply...
My options are:
1) Apply anyway
2) Request rescore which will take 3 weeks and hope that they will increase my speaking score with 2 points.
3) Retake it.

The deadline is so close I can only do one of the options... How much weigh do they put on this test? If invited to interview I guess I can prove my speaking skills anyway. Although, I am afraid my application gets cut out because it is lower than 109... Please give me some advice!

Hello Hoffman

I think if you have a great GMAT score such as 750, it might counterbalance your TOEFL Score, which is already great and shows a good command of English. However If I were you, I would retake the TOEFL. I am sure you can do better and your 2nd attempt and I do not think rescore will change anything in your score.

TOEFL is tricky

I think my suggestion is to go ahead and apply anyway. I don't think they will reject you because you are short of 2 points from the criteria if you have other things in good order. forexample, if you have excellent gmat score, good gpa and great recommendations. Furthermore, you may not improve as many points as you would like to. TOEFL is very tricky exam that your result may deteriorate because of the distraction in the room. (at least in my experience - I felt like I was in a market)

finally, I wish you good luck on your application.
