Dear Prashant,

Here are a few reflections on your profile:
  1. Your career progression at work is not clear. Do you mean you have been in the same role/designation for 30 months? Is that normal? You will need to highlight the stuff that differentiates you - more so because you are from a pretty competitive pool. For instance, the 2 awards you mention - are they really a big deal? If yes, you should explain why
  2. The internship at Zomato could earn you some brownie points, though it will really depend on what your post-MBA plan is. That is essential to get a good overview of the profile
  3. For reasons mentioned here, I will refrain from dishing out school suggestions. But suffice it to say that you need to really think deep on your differentiation to stake a claim at some respectable schools out there.
Hope this sparks some thoughts

Cheers,

Hey Prashant864p! We saw this post from you for profile review when we got the notice that you're following us here on BTG, so thanks for the follow, and let's see what we might have to say about this. :-)

First of all: Academics are great, and slightly differentiated from the typical candidate pool of Indian engineer due to the chemistry part, and the great school. Nice work there, that helps. The internship experience you described also sounds a bit unusual given the stereotype of this profile, so another plus. The post-college work experience is a nice trajectory so far but what you're likely to encounter at many of the schools you're targeting is that you're just still quite early in your career. A school like the ISB in particular really wants to see people with more experience. They accept a range of ages/levels but you need to be even more of a superstar if you're coming in younger. And maybe you are that!!! We obviously can't say too much based on just a little info here. We're seeing some good stuff but you're definitely on the young side.

All schools are open-minded about this though and would just need to be convinced as to why you believe now is the right time for your MBA. So it's up to you to pitch them.

Many schools on your list are also quite different and will require some different approaches to one another. And of course, we really need to see a GMAT score to have more visibility into the chances. We feel that a 720 is just a starting point given your candidate pool so hopefully those practice tests end up being predictive for you! Higher always helps. You do have Round 1 on your side (assuming you're getting the GMAT done quickly?) so everything is potentially lining up for you - but a lot of balls in the air and different variables to take into account.

We have a special guide for candidates like you: The Indian's Guide to Getting In - it was written in an attempt to help you be more self-sufficient in this process and possibly feel empowered to skip all admissions consulting services (funny that we'd do that, since we're admissions consultants too, but that's how we roll!).

Anyway, good luck with that GMAT!! You'll probably do great on it. Stop back by and let us know how it goes!!

GMAT Score:740

Hi Prashant,

Coming from a competitive pool of IT applicants, you have a few pluses and a few minuses.

1. A top engineering college and interesting internship roles behind you. To complement this, you will need to have GMAT score of 720 or above.

2. Your experience is on the lower side. Hence ISB or any other B School would be interested in knowing how you can match up to the competitors who come in with more years of experience and are expected to exude greater confidence when it comes to taking up positions of responsibility.

3. Clarity in thought and well defined career goals would be of utmost importance in getting your application accepted. What you want to do post MBA will matter a lot and you should be able to demonstrate linkages to how your current role has helped you or urged you in believing that MBA is the way to your goals
4. Ecs will definitely have to be strong so as to showcase that though you may not have leadership responsibilities at work, you are in no ways a laggard and you have shown exposures at various levels to prove that you are a team player, a good communicator and a leader in your non- professional work space.

Thanks for your valuable feedback Manish!
I have not been into the same role for past(read designation) 30 months
The trajectory has been like Associate-->Senior Associate-->Consultant(Expected in 3-4 months)
The primary roles have been similar though. No leadership roles yet.

What differentiates me (I think it does) is the fact that I have been the go to man(from entire team with much more experienced folks) whenever my superiors had to take a shot(research) in an entirely new technology (With very limited information on internet)and I have been able to deliver successfully too (Not sure how much relevant it is to B school admissions perspective)

The 2 awards are not very big a deal but the cost savings for the client I did through the business impact, that is an important/unique asset.

Let me know your further views/feedback on this.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers
Prashant

The career progression sounds good Prashant - is that normal or extraordinary? If latter, worth highlighting in your essays.

On the point regarding differentiation, try and discuss this with your managers who have had considerable experience. If they vouch for the fact that this is really a big deal, then probably you have a story at hand. Explain in detail about why this is significant and make it real for the adcoms. Ditto for the awards - if they arent distinctive enough (meaning many people in your organization get it regularly), explain the impact they had (ideally in $$ terms).

All the best
