Demonstrations

by j_shreyans » Sat Nov 01, 2014 8:57 pm
The demonstrations in Paris was marred by clashes between police officers and bottle-throwing gangs of youths.

A)was marred by clashes between police officers

B)was marred by a clash among police

C)were marred by clashes among police officers

D)were marred by a clash between a police officer

E)were marred by clashes between police officers

Why OAE what is wrong in D

I can eliminate option A (because of was), B( wrongly uses of was and among),and C( wrongly uses of among).

Hi j_shreyans,

What is the source of this question? I ask because there isn't anything inherently (gramatically) wrong with either of the two answers that you mentioned (the correct answer and the other one).

I think that the "intent" of the question is that since there were demonstrations (plural), then there were clashes (plural) between officers (plural) and gangs of youths (plural). So the correct answer is meant to be E

I guess the choice E is correct because a problem might not have occurred between a (single) police offer and gangs.
