Should be using had been here as past and present both are involved.

D is quoting a list of four people here namely the author, Melville, the poet, and Whitman. It changes the original sentence which talks about only two people.OA is A. I wanted to know the problem with option D. Can anyone help?

I agree with cyrwr1 -- grammatically, D lists three people. One would expect "the author Herman Melville" in the initial position.
