The TGV, France's high-speed train, set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, which shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages over 293 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour).

A. set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, which shuttles
B. set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, shuttling
C. set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, it shuttles
D. which set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, shuttles
E. setting a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train; it shuttled

Confused between options A and D.
Please explain.

OA is D.

the questions is based on modifier and meaning.

Read option A

The TGV, France's high-speed train, set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, which shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne

Here which refers to fastest nonmagnetic train but the original intended meaning is that TGV is the fastest train among nonmagnetic trains and it delivers shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne.

Now read option D

The TGV, France's high-speed train, which set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages

which clearly refers to TGF train.

which set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train.........this part is just a modifier.

he TGV, France's high-speed train ...shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages

makes sense?

Can you please share the source of this problem?

I wanna know who makes these weird questions it's definitely not an official one!

Check the options -

A. The TGV, France's high-speed train, set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, which shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages over 293 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour).

The TGV,...................... which shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages over 293 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour).

The red highlighted part in the sentence modifies The TGV.

This structure is erronous since it lacks any verb .

D. The TGV, which set a record in 2007 to become the fastest nonmagnetic train, shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages over 293 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour).

The TGV.........shuttles passengers from Lorraine to Champagne-Ardenne and averages over 293 kilometers per hour (173 miles per hour).

This is a complete sentence , the violet highlighted part above modifies the train " The TGV "

Hence answer is (D)
