Televesion

Although it claims to delve into political issues, television can be superficial such as when each of the three major networks broadcast exactly the same statement from a political candidate.
(A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks
(B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks
(C) superficial if the three major networks all
(D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks
(E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

IMO E
(A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks

each -broadcasts ( Each is singular)

(B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks

Awkward and usage of "If" with "can"

(C) superficial if the three major networks all

Usage of "all " is incorrect as this implies all networks working together

(D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks

each -broadcasts ( Each is singular)

(E) superficial, as when the three major networks each
Corrects SVA issue by making subject as "three major networks"

imo:E

here "each" is used as a post modifier which is generally put after a a plural noun...

sentence:Although it claims to delve into political issues, television can be superficial such as when each of the three major networks broadcast exactly the same statement from a political candidate.

here "each" which is used as a post-modifier for "three major networks" doesnt require a singlular verb...

A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks

(B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks

(C) superficial if the three major networks all

(D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks

(E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

i hope this helps..

thanks.

I fail to understand how each at the end of the choice E is not making the subject singular?

(A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks

As you know of is a middleman and hence "subject is each*

singular subject must take singular verbs

hence boradcast is incorrect

E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

Here you can see subject NOW is "three major network " and not "each"

3 networks is plural and hence broadcast is plural

One more funda: When each follows a plural subject, the verb and subsequent pronouns remain in the plural:

E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

E meets the funda above and hencewe need a plural verb such as broadcast

Does this clear your doubt

Basically - remember this rule

If 'each' is placed before the subject - it makes the subject singular and then the subject can accept only a singular verb

if 'each' is placed AFTER the subject then it does not affect the singularity or plurality of the subject and the subject can accept a plural verb form if the subject is plural.

In this case the subject is 'three major networks' - plural

each is after the subject in choice e and thus does not affect the singularity or plurality.

Hence, choice E is the correct answer :)

Thanks mals24 for pointing this rule out to me - see, I haven't forgotten YET! :P
