A frame 2 inches wide is placed around a rectangular picture with dimensions 8 inches by 12 inches. What is the area of the frame, in square inches?

A.44
B.96
C.128
D.144
E.168

The answer in the textbook is B by subtracting 12*16 = 12*8 or 192-96 which equals 96. But is there an alternative way to do this?

Alternate approach:

The area of the frame is equal to the sum of the values in blue:
4+24+4+16+16+4+24+4 = 96.

The correct answer is B.
