World's Population

by okigbo » Mon Oct 19, 2009 11:20 pm
With only 5% of the world's population, US citizens consume 28% of its nonrenewable resources, drive more than 1/3 of its automobiles and use 21 times more water per capital than Europeans do

a. With
b. As
c. Being
d. Despite having
e. Although accounting for[/spoiler][/b]

D. Despite having...

I think the sentence is trying to illustrate that the U.S. population is relatively small, but accounts for significant amounts of consumption.

IMO: E

I highly doubt that it's B, as that failed spoiler attempt says.

A- Misplaced modifier.

B- Doesn't account for the fact that this large representation by US citizens is contrary to what would usually be believed

C- Sounds awkward/"being" is usually bad

D- US citizens don't "have" 5 % of the world's population, they are 5% of the world's population

E- Ding ding ding! We get what we wanted in B and at the same time get a usable verb phrase (accounting for)

What's this source/what's the OA?
