soft drink

Although the school would receive financial benefits if it had soft drink vending machines in the cafeteria, we should not allow them. Allowing soft drink machines there would not be in our students' interest. If our students start drinking more soft drinks, they will be less healthy.

The argument depends on which of the following?

(A) If the soft drink vending machines were placed in the cafeteria, students would consume more soft drinks as a result.
(B) The amount of soft drinks that most students at the school currently drink is not detrimental to their health.
(C) Students are apt to be healthier if they do not drink soft drinks at all than if they just drink small amounts occasionally.
(D) Students will not simply bring soft drinks from home if the soft drink vending machines are not placed in the cafeteria.
(E) The school's primary concern should be to promote good health among its students.

Please help me by negating approach.

Thanks.

Conclusion: We should not allow soft drink vending machines in the cafeteria.
Premise: If students drink more soft drinks, they'll be less healthy.

The correct answer, when negated, should undermine the conclusion.

A negated: If the soft drink vending machines were placed in the cafeteria, students would NOT consume more soft drinks as a result.

The only reason given to reject the vending machines is that if they're in the cafeteria, students will consume more soft drinks and become less healthy. If putting the machines in the cafeteria doesn't cause the students to consume more soft drinks, what difference does it make if they're there? Because the negation of A undermines the argument, this is the correct answer.

(D) Students will not simply bring soft drinks from home if the soft drink vending machines are not placed in the cafeteria. - they might bring cola from home and still might consume more drink at school due to vending machine

(A) If the soft drink vending machines were placed in the cafeteria, students would consume more soft drinks as a result. - definitely true. If we negate it the argument will fall.

(B) The amount of soft drinks that most students at the school currently drink is not detrimental to their health. - it might be. Might not be. So what?

(C) Students are apt to be healthier if they do not drink soft drinks at all than if they just drink small amounts occasionally. - irrelevant

(D) Students will not simply bring soft drinks from home if the soft drink vending machines are not placed in the cafeteria. - they might get cola from home but installing vending machine in school will definitely further increase the consumption.

(E) The school's primary concern should be to promote good health among its students - irrelevant
