Need advice for verbal - 610 Q50 V23

by joey.nht » Sun Nov 05, 2017 7:13 pm
I just gave my first attempt for gmat last week, ended up with 610 Q50 V23

I have prepared for it since february, but i did it in the wrong way and was not really focused on that until august because of my company projects. I started to solve problems in OG without any foundation for few months.
I just started with Manhattan and Kaplan from august and have to admit that Manhattan helped me a lot on verbal since I could see my improvement when i solved problems in OG again.

I took some mock tests from Manhattan, Kaplan and of course from GMAT prep. The highest score i could get is 640 Q47 V31 and the lowest was 500. I know that I have some problems with verbal again, especially sentence correction, which i thought it was improved.

I was so shock when I got the score after the test, even I knew that I am bad at SC but didn't think that it could be that bad. So I'm planning to take it again and focus only on verbal.

Is there any suggestion for that since I have only 3 weeks left and my target score is around 670-700?

Here's my verbal crash course:

- Read voraciously everyday for 10 days. (Anything challenging will do.) There's research suggesting that the physiology of our brains changes when we read more: https://www.theatlantic.com/education/ar ... in/282952/

- Consider incorporating some mindfulness meditation. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archi ... on/275564/

Afterwards, review the official material you've worked through and see if there are patterns to the questions you've missed. Anything unclear, post here. Jot a few notes to yourself about simple adjustments you can make. Remember that for all the strategies/grammar rules we teach, the verbal section is primarily about logic and focus. Practice boiling everything down to its essence. Always ask yourself, before you select an answer in sentence correction, if the sentence, when read literally, is clear and logical. Before you select an answer in Critical Reasoning always take another moment and ask if your answer really does impact the conclusion. Before you select an answer in Reading Comp ask yourself if there's textual support for that answer. Be relentless. Then hit some fresh official tests:

Hi joey.nht,

With a V23, you would have lost significant points in all 3 major Verbal categories (SC, RC and CR). Thankfully, the Verbal section of the GMAT is as consistent and predictable as the Quant section is, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. In addition, with a 610, you're closer to a 670+ than you probably realize, so you won't have to make big improvements across the entire Verbal section to hit that score (assuming that the Q50 is a score that you can hit again).

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you're looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and goals:

1) What is your exact Test Date?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thank you so much for your answer and here is my timeline:
1. The exact test date will be nov. 24th
2. I'm planning to apply for round 2 this year, and i'm to explain on the extra essay that i would take gmat again.
3. I'm applying to Fisher this year, if it dont work, i'm planning for Fisher and Stern next year after improving my score.

I'm working on others document too and it will be done in this month so gmat is my only problem.
