I would say it's not that big of an issue if you handle it correctly. If you tell the recruiter that you'd rather run your own company but want to learn on their dime first, then obviously yes it would hurt. The bigger question they would have is how well you could adjust to a big organization doing...

I think it depends. I interviewed and was accepted with long-ish (ear length) hair and a beard and I didn't have any problems. However I talked mostly about entrepreneurship, so I imagine if I wanted to go into investment banking it would be a different story.

I agree with Jim. You are a very unique applicant with a very unique story and have a degree from a great school. I don't see why you couldn't get into whatever program you want with the right essay, GPA and GMAT.

I think with your background, a lower GMAT score won't be as dangerous for you. With a great application and personal history, a 640, while not the best, won't put you out of contention. Since this is an MBA forum, I'm not sure you'll find many people who know the answer to your question, however that said, I do not believe MPAs are as competitive as MBAs, so a 660 may gain you admits into better schools than it would if you were applying for an MBA.

I personally feel that the class is a far better value than any set of books. I went through all the MGMAT books and only got a 30 point improvement (obviously results vary). I signed up for a class and improved 100pts. Well worth it IMO.
