Optional essay
Lisa, I scored a 690 on the GMAT -- 92nd percentile verbal, 70th percentile math. Since many of the top schools look for an 80/80 split, should I address my quant background in the optional essay? In my previous optional essays-- to HBS and UCLA -- I decided to address my lack of managerial experien...

Duke Fuqua Margins
Hi, I have a question about the short essays on the Duke Fuqua application. Duke doesn't give a word limit, but instead says it should be no smaller than 10 point font, and no longer than 1-page (1.5. spacing). But what about margins? Depending on margins and font size, this essay could fall anywher...

Legacy recommendation
Lisa, I have a question regarding legacy recommendations. I've submitted my application to HBS with three recommendations (2 professional, 1 academic); however, I also have two uncles who graduated from HBS, and I'm wondering if it's considered bad taste to have them send a short note to HBS giving ...

Dear gmat4babu, How long it takes you to write strong essays will vary based on the individual. It depends on how good a writer you are and how many questions there are. Some folks can write great essays in a couple weeks and others need 3-4 weeks and outside help to revise their thoughts/ideas int...

Submitting applications over the holidays...
Lisa, I'm wondering if there is any point to handing in applications over the next 12 days or so, since almost all the schools have sent letters saying their admissions office will be closed. I was hoping to get my applications in before the mad rush at the deadline, but I guess that will be hard to...

HBS word limit
Lisa, One of the Harvard essays asks for your three greatest achievements (and why) using only 600 words. I feel like I can't give any level of detail with this question, since I'm only afforded 200 words per accomplishment. I've tightened up my essay as much as I see fit, and I'm still at 626 words...

Free application peer review
Can anyone recommend a site offering free peer review of application essays? I cannot afford the pricey consultants on this board, but I am hoping to get some feedback on my essays before I submit them. I'm willing to give feedback to others, if they want it.

Lisa, Why do you say that completing 6 applications is ambitious? Most of the schools only have 4 or 5 essays of less than 500 words each. I write for a living, but I've spent quite a few days procrastinating, because I can't figure out exactly what I'm supposed to write. Shouldn't 35 days be enough...

Application Essays
Lisa, Do you have any recommendations on how to start the application process? I'm applying to Harvard, MIT, Duke, UCLA, UT-Austin, and USC, and I haven't started writing the essays. I've got about 5 weeks to get everything done. Is there enough overlap between these schools essays that I can get aw...

Legacy @ Harvard?
Lisa, I wanted to ask you a question about legacy at business schools. My uncle (dad's brother) is an HBS grad, and though my profile is fairly strong, I'm wondering if it helps my chances at all having a family member who attended the school? I know that legacy usually only extends to mother/father...
