Before in the original sentence is enough to maintain the time sequence.Hence we don't need past perfect to define the time sequence.
So simple past tense 'was' is enough.

In prime numbers,only for 2 the sum of distinct factors is odd.
We cannot take 4 as the example,as sum of one pair of distinct factors is not odd.

rx_11, 'it' intends to refer firm.But in option A the noun firm is far away and there is another singular noun 'sample' in between.So this IT creates an ambiguity. Hope this clarify!!
