One-fifth of the light switches produced by a certain factory are defective. Four-fifths of the defective switches are rejected and 1/20 of the nondefective switches are rejected by mistake. If all the switches not rejected are sold, what percent of the switches sold by the factory are defective? (...

Re: greatest integer function

The greatest integer function for a given number is equal to the integer it has last exceeded, for a number x, its greatest integer function is denoted by [x]. If │x + 2│ = x + 2; and [x] = 3, and x is an integral multiple of 0.9. Find x. We know from │x + 2│...

Area = 1/2(bh) = 12 .5(4)h=12 h=6 so the absolute value of the y-intercept is 6. We can't know it is positive or negative unless we know more about line k. Since we know it has a positive x-intercept and is positively sloped, its y-intercept is negative. A I also arrived @ the answer the same way. ...

Re: 10! and 10! + 20 inclusive

sanju09 wrote:How many integers divisible by 3 are there between 10! and 10! + 20 inclusive?

A. 6
B. 7
C. 8
D. 9
E. 10

OA B
Since 10! includes a multiplication of 3 10! must be divisible by 3 so that's one. No 20/3 = 6.

6+1 = 7.

Here is the next one.... Is x=y? I. (x+y)(1/x + 1/y) = 4 II. (x-30)^2 = (y-30)^2 I'll go with D. Either 1). when we factor this out we get x + (x/y) + (y/x) + y = 4 so we have the sum of 4 numbers that must equal 4. I could only get this statement to work if both x & y = 1 so 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4....

Re: OG11, DS #144

This fact applies for both the statements The answer cannot be D since N is positive. N can only be 0 or 1 as a result statement 2 is insuff I ll go for A If N=0 then it is not a positive integer. If N = 1 then N doesn't satisfy the 2nd equation as (1/10)^0 = 1 which is not less than 0.1 For the 2n...

Great solution Morgoth! Is this question type likely to appear on the GMAT though? The standard deviation questions I've seen are far simpler than this one. This one requires that you know about normal distribution which I haven't seen in any of the study materials and really haven't seen since my b...

Re: for DS questions - square root

Lets say the question says... whats the value of x? 1. sq root(x) = x-2 solving we get x=4 and x=1 However x=1 doesnt satisfy the above equation...and the ans is x=4...so can we say Statement 1 is sufficient? Thanks Keep in mind also that if x was 4 you could also end up -2 = 4-2 or -2 = 2. Almost ...
