Thank you sooo much Ian for explaining the solution so systematically. Cramya, I made an error in my solution, just figured it out after looking at Ian's solution. You will not get 2x or -2x in your solution. Like you mentioned your possible solutions will be 2k and -2k and hence 2k gives you maximu...

The way I would approach |x-k| | |x+k| | y + + ( -2k ) + - ( 2x ) - + ( -2x ) - - ( 2k ) This is where I am stuck to come to a decision. Shoot I copied the question incorrectly. I took addition instead of subtraction. Sorry for that. I tried it again and my solution looks similar to yours. I'm gett...

Try to use Ian's number line method (or distance method) to solve absolute value questions. It'll be much simpler. Y = lX-Kl + lX+Kl In general, lA-Bl = distance between A and B. lX-Kl = distance between X and K lX+Kl = distance between X and -K. You write this as lX-(-K)l So basically X is in betwe...

This is what Ron Purewal has to say about 1000 SC 2) if this problem is taken from a source that indicates (b) as the correct answer, run, don't walk, away from that source. run for your life. if you can set fire to it while simultaneously running for your life, all the better. http://www.beatthegma...

Agree with anshul In A, it clearly refers to 'surface', as there is only one noun that 'it' can refer to. It can't refer to paint because paint is used as a verb. (D) the surface and apply primer before you apply paint to the surface In D, who is 'you' referring to? Pronouns are supposed to unambigu...

If you have, say, the fraction a/2^n, you can multiply on the top and bottom by 5^n to get (a*5^n)/(2^n * 5^n) = (a*5^n)/(10^n) Since you have a power of 10 (so a number like 10, or 100, or 1000, etc) in the denominator, this must be a terminating decimal. Similarly, if you have a fraction like 21/...

Hi Karan Well like I said the use of comma before the 2nd George Eliot dint seem right to me. Also in D: before George Eliot....became George Eliot - seems a little awkward. The use of 'known as' in option A makes the meaning more clearer that before Eliot became a more known name bla bla bla. So ov...

I'll go with A
Given: s and t are 2 different numbers.
Asked: is s+t = 0 or is s = -t?
St 1: s cannot be equal to t (since they are 2 different numbers)
So the only option left is s = -t.
So St 1 is suff.
St 2: it just means that the 2 numbers have opposite signs.
So St 2 is insuff.

question: Is xy+1 divisible by 3? St 1: When x is divided by 3, the remainder is 1. That is: X = 3A + 1 No information about y so statement is insuff. St 2: When y is divided by 9, the remainder is 8. That is: Y = 9B + 8 No information about x so statement is insuff. Combining 1 and 2 X = 3A + 1 Y =...

Also you use past perfect when 2 events take place in the past and the sequence of the events is unclear. So in my opinion you dont need the past perfect tense, because the use of the word 'before' clearly specifies which event takes place first and which occurs later. This is the same reason to el...

B uses 'had been' incorrectly. If there are 2 events that took place in the past, you'd use 'had been' for the 1st event. In this case before he became known as George Eliot is the later event. So you need simple past. Also you use past perfect when 2 events take place in the past and the sequence o...

Remember these 2 exponential rules: 1. A^x*A^y = A^(x+y) This means when you multiply identical bases (A), you add their exponents (x+y). 2. (A^x)/(A^y) = A^(x-y) This means when you divide identical bases (A), you subtract their exponents (x-y). 4^(k+1) Applying rule 1: 4^k*4 4^(k+1) - 4 4^k*4 - 4 ...

'two out of 5 households' is plural so we need 'their' and not 'its'. Hence eliminate B and E. (A) their own food from a vegetable garden in backyards and city lots This seems to mean as if there is one common vegetable garden in all backyards and city lots. Hence we need the plural form of 'vegetab...
