Your flashcards, unfortunately, are giving you faulty information. Both of those sentences are incorrect. These are all correct sentences: Driving to dinner, Fred lost his wallet. While driving to dinner, Fred lost his wallet. While he drove to dinner, Fred lost his wallet. While Fred was driving to...

That's correct. The question does not specify that x is an integer. So, both sqrt3 and -sqrt3 are valid values for x given statement 2.

In most CR passages, there is a conclusion drawn (the main point) and some evidence (the information that supports the conclusion). Practice ID'ing both of these before moving on with your GMAT prep. Once you're efficient at doing that, move into the assumptions. Something that is not intuitive abou...

I would give this essay a 5. Just a few things need to be tweaked, but you are well on your way to a top scoring essay. First off, make sure that every body paragraph is indeed a full paragraph. Tell us the flaw you are focusing on in the topic sentence, provide some evidence, provide a counterexamp...

You're asking a question about parallelism in lists. This comes up on the GMAT quite often. Here's a correct sentence: At the zoo, I saw a giraffe, a zebra, and an elephant eating lunch. Here is another correct sentence: At the zoo, I saw a giraffe, zebra, and elephant eating lunch. In the first sen...

Yes, that's exactly right AJ. You always have to check for restrictions on the variable in data sufficiency. In this question, they simply ask you whether x>0. We can safely assume that x can be positive, negative, or zero. Many times, that is not the case (i.e. "X is a positive integer..."...

Great question! Statement 1: x can equal 0 or 2 and satisfy this equation, so it must be insufficient. (0)^2=2(0) (2)^2=2(2) Statement 2: x can equal 0 or sqrt3 or -sqrt3, so it is also insufficient. (0)^3=3(0) (sqrt3)^3=(sqrt3)^3 Put the statements together, and we see that the only number that sat...

So, this is a collection probability. Let's say the five women are Annie, Barbara, Catherine, Denise and Elizabeth. Clearly we need to choose three from this bunch, so the tendency is to say 5*4*3. However, this misses the point that (Annie Barbara Catherine) is the same group as (Catherine Barbara ...

The statement will be insufficient if we can name different numbers that satisfy the statement, but have different values in the tenths digit. The first statement says the hundredths digit is 5. So, the number could be: 5.25 21.75 16.35 Insufficient Statement 2 says that rounded to the nearest tenth...

This is a great question, and one with a very common GMAT strategy that I espouse to all my students: just start filling in variables for all possible angles, and see what happens. (I'm going to refer to angles just as the three letters.) So, for example, is BDC=2x, then we know that BDA=180-2x. Now...

Your instincts were good, in wanting to eliminate a modifier that seems to be too far away from the noun it is modifying. However, it is perfectly acceptable for the thing being modified to be a multiple word noun. In answer C, it is perfectly plausible that "the library at Alexandria" is ...

As you probably know, if something is set off by commas, then it is removable from the sentence. Like in this sentence: Terry, the team captain, recorded a triple double. The phrase "the team captain" is removable from the sentence, but we are still left with a grammatically correct senten...

Be careful with your wording here. An absolute phrase and a modifier are not mutually exclusive. An absolute phrase is simply a type of modifier. "One by one, down the hill come the mothers of the neighborhood, their kids running beside them ." Just know that, if something is set off by co...

For Doubt #2 in this thread, the word "which" is in fact a relative pronoun, and should hook back to what immediately precedes it. However, sometimes, what immediately precedes the relative pronoun is a group of words. For example: "I interviewed the members of the team that won the c...

Mohit -- You are raising some really interesting points. Here's my take on your first Doubt. Wrong: "Kendra is happy, like all her friends, to be on vacation." It seems to me that to make this type of construction correct, we would need to add a verb to that modifier in order to make thing...
