What is the value of y?

(1) 3|x^2 - 4| = y - 2

(2) |3 - y| = 11

OA is C

I understand why statement 2 is insuff - but i'm having trouble working through statement 1. If someone can provide some insight on statement 1 and how this problem is solved? Thanks all!

@ GMAT GURU NY - Can you please explain the statement


Total possible ways:
Any arrangement of WWMM will yield exactly 2 W and 2 M.
Thus, the result above must be multiplied by the number of ways to arrange the 4 elements WWMM.
Number ways to arrange WWMM = 4!/(2!2!) = 6.

@gmatguruny -- is it ok to use simple numbers, #1 for the value of X?

I thought one should steer clear of using the number 1 when plugging solving such questions like this.

@ chufus .... should i also be concerned with the # of individuals that are in both x and y .... meaning should i eliminate individuals that aree in both x and y because they are in both groups and not just one?
