Ian your analysis was great. However, a small correction to your conclusion that 1 is insufficient. x = 11/3 or 7 => the three sides are (35/3,35/3,25/3) or (15,15,25) Given the contraint that 2 < x < 12 leaves us with x = 11/3 So (1) is sufficient. (2) This says x+8 >= 4x-3 and x+8 >= 2x+1 This onl...

Stick to the basics |x| > 0 |x-y| gives the distance between x and y |x| is a V shaped graph centered on (0,0) on the xy plane |x-a| is a V shaped graph centered on (0,a) on the xy plane When you see Qs like |x-a| = |x-b| then x = (a+b)/2 because x is equidistant from a and b Above all GMAT question...

IMO C In the xy-plane, does the line with equation y = 3x + 2 contain the point (r,s)? (1) (3r + 2 - s)(4r + 9 - s) = 0 => 3r+2 = s or 4r+9 = s i.e. (1) is true either if (r,s) falls on line 3x+2=y or if (r,s) falls on line 4r+9=y (2) (4r - 6 - s)(3r + 2 - s) = 0 => 4r-6 = s or 3r+2 = s Now we have ...

The chord being tangential to the inner circle, tells us two things: 1) The line joining the center ( 0 ) and the chord's intersection with inner circle ( T ) is perpendicular with the chord ( AB ). 2) Triangle OAB is isoceles, because: OA = OB = outer circle's radius R In an isoceles triangle, OT i...
