Re: combinatorics-three guys and three girls

Hi, This is a combinatorics problem that I'm looking for a similar approach to solving.(as I've done one problem below) Three guys and three girls sit down in a row of six chairs. If no guy will sit next to another guy and no girl will sit next to another girl, in how many different ways can the gu...

Interesting! My thought is that it probably won't help the quantiatively-challenged, though. In a way, it hurts: with the GRE you are competing with all of the engineering PhDs, etc. etc. But what about a person such as me, who is not quantitatively challenged but verbally is.[as per GMAT] I have t...

Re: Time and work

A can complete a project in 20 days and B can complete the same project in 30 days. If A and B start working on the project together and A quits 10 days before the project is completed, in how many days will the project be completed? A. 18 days B. 27 days C. 26.67 days D. 16 days E. 12 days A's rat...

Re: AP-III

IMO D sum of m terms = m/2 [2a + (m-1)d] sum of n terms = n/2 [2a + (n-1)d] m/2 [2a + (m-1)d] / n/2 [2a + (n-1)d] = m^2 / n^2 you solve this to get 2a = d mth term = a + (m-1)d nth term = a + (n-1)d substitute d=2a a+ (m-1)2a / a+ (n-1)2a = (a + 2am - 2a )/ (a + 2an - 2a) = 2m-1 / 2n-1 Hence D

Re: Sum of integers in table

There are many ways of solving this question, I'll show you 1

if you look at the rows closely, every row is a table of a number starting from 1 to 7

1+2+3+4+5+6+7 = 28

28 + -2(28) + 3(28) -4(28) + 5 (28) -6(28) + 7(28)

= 28 ( 1-2+3-4+5-6+7) = 4*28 = 112

Hope this helps.

Re: median values

if 0< x< 1

we can arrange the sequence in the ascending form

x^3 < x^2 < x < sqroot x < x^-1

median = middle value = x

If you are unsure of the sequence, just plug in x= 1/4

1/64 < 1/16 < 1/4 < 1/2 < 4

Hence A.

Hope this helps.

Re: ratio of triangles

Base of ∆PQR = 10-6 = 4 [only look at the values of x axis of points P & R] Height of ∆PQR = 4 [look at the value of y axis of point Q] Area of ∆PQR = 1/2 * 4 * 4 = 8 Similarly, you can calculate the area of ∆LMN Area of ∆LMN = 1/2 * 12 * 12 = 72...

Re: Length of a triangle

Question BC=? AD = BC, let angle ABD = y x+y = 2x [external triangle theorem] y = 2x-x = x y=x if y=x, then AD=BD. AD= BD and BC=BD, therefore AD=BC Statement I AD=6, therefore BC=6 Sufficient. Statement II x=36, we cannot find the side just by knowing the angle. Insufficient. Hence A. Hope this hel...

ern5231 wrote:If m is the median of 3 consecutive positive integers then which one must be true? (1) m>0 (2) m is odd or even (3) m is an integer.

I dont have the solution to this but i feel that 1 and 3 must be true. What is your take on this?
I agree.

2) m could be odd or even
