Hi, I am not sure of a general way but the way I would do this problem is as follows: since x<8/9 and y<1/8. x+y has to be less than 8/9+1/8 i.e, x+y<73/72 x+y<73/72 doesnt necessarily mean x+y<1. it could be 1.00000009 or some value less than 73/72 but greater than 1. so, my answer would be (E). ok here you go:
1st day - 0.1
2nd day - either 0.4(0.1+0.3) or 0.2(0.1 x 2) . We choose the least so 0.2
3rd day - either 0.5(0.2 + 0.3) or 0.4(0.2 x 2). We choose 0.4
4th day - either 0.7(0.4 + 0.3) or 0.8(0.4 x 2). We choose 0.7
Ans is 0.7
