i think i get the problem now... "if Sam were twice as old as he is" 2S "he would be 40 years younger than Jim" 2S + 40 = J "if jim is 10 years younger than Sam" J = S - 10 "how old is Sam?" 2S + 40 = S - 10 S = 30 what's the OA? The equation does not stand. ...

Right.. Then, why square root of 18?
Is that a rule?
The equation is equal to 18..
You break down the equation into (t+1)(t+1)...
and all of the sudden, the equation is equal to square root of 18...

I am trying to understand the underlying solution to this problem taken from Manhattan GMAT. Find t : t2(t-square)+2t+1=18 Since the equation cannot be factored easily, one can utilize a formula to derive t. Actually, you can obtain the books in a few days. I ordered the books from Manhattan GMAT on Tuesday, and the books arrived in the Philippines on Friday!
