What is the value of integer x? (1) 4<(x-1)*(x-1)<16 (2) 4<(x-1)*(x+1)<16 1) 4<(x-1)^2<16; (x-1)^2>4; (x-1)^2-4>0; now using the formula a^2-b^2=(a-b)*(b-a); we have; (x-1-2)*(x-1+2)>0; (x-3)(x+1)>0; i.e. x-3 and x+3 are of same sign; and this inequality will hold true for x<-1 and x>3; now the onl...

What exactly is the alligation method? And is it ever beneficial to use, as the last poster broke it down pretty simply and the other two I can't say I followed completely.

Jerseyny, Since statement 1) states "of the 12 girls" it tells us there are 12 girls in the class. If it just said "12 of the girls" (yes a simple switch of words coincidentally) then we wouldn't know the full number of girls and therefore the full number of boys. Also since it n...

I know as usual I am probably missing something, or something is missing from the question, but doesn't it ask is (A+B) >= (X+Y) ... but then statement 1) explicitly notes....(X+Y) <= (A+B).... Too good/obvious to be true, it probably isn't, so I'm curious as to the correct answer and explanation. [...

Is there a quick method besides going through all of the exponents one by one as the solution here proposes. Or its just a matter of knowing these exponential properties?

I initially thought the answer would be A, but maybe I am falling into a trap here. Vineeshp, you note the example y=3 and z=7, and x=4. And you state Y is not equal to X + Z and |X| = Y-Z. However wouldn't Y-Z = 3-4 = -4. If x = 4, |X| = 4. 4 does not equal -4. I point this out because I think we c...
