Scored 680 :( Q49 V32 .. Should I retake?

by champ0007 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 9:19 pm
Hi,

I finished my GMAT yesterday and scored 680 Q49 V32

From what I was feeling, during my exam my verbal was going pretty decent, I was negating all the options before finalising the one, but in the end, was quite disappointed with V32 !
In my mocks, I was getting verbal score of about V30 - V39
I knew that If I could touch a score of V40 or even V35+, I would cross 700+ mark
I thought my verbal was getting better, but I think it was all a myth :(

yesterday in a rush after my exam, I thought of taking a date for retest ... but then I realised what different could I do in another one month.. So need your suggestions.

GMAT Prep #1 700 Q49 V35
Kaplan 690
MGMAT #1 680 Q49 V34
Princeton 650 Q51 V30
Knewton 620 Q45 V30
MGMAT#2 710 Q49 V39
GMAT Prep #2 700 Q49 V35
MGMAT#3 730 Q51 V39

As you can see, my Quant was fairly alright... but verbal was my main concern.

I think SC was okay... but I was really struggling with CR and RC.

Somedays I would get all my CR questions right... and sometimes they all went wrong ! and same for RC.. So really couldn't concentrate on any one area... tried reading LSAT CR in the last few days... but realised that it was too late to actualy start a book... skimmed through it .. but probably couldnt absorb much from it.

My Options -
Apply to B-Schools with my current score and try to diversify my profile (with a typical IT profile, its bit difficult)

OR

Get some strategy to crack V40 mark and retake the exam ...
But unless I can get myself to that level where I feel that my verbal is sufficiently improved... I dont want to take the test again.. For all you know I might end up getting a lower score if I dont prepare well !!!

Wanted to write a great debrief of how I scored more than 700... but sadly that couldnt happen !!!... my score is neither too bad nor too great ... so am quite confused ?????

Please suggest.

Thanks in advance.

Champ, can you post your profile in research MBA / Application process area? Maybe someone with a similar profile will share something.

680 is not bad. If your target schools are not too highly ranked, you have solid experience and a few unique stories to talk about, don worry about the retake. Also, are you looking for Fall 2012? Application tools have opened almost everywhere, so do you have enough time for a retake?
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)
