by Beat-D-GMAT » Sun Jan 03, 2010 10:29 am
Because of wireless service costs plummeting in the last year, and as mobile phones are increasingly common, many people[/url] now using their mobile phones to make calls across a wide region at night and on weekends, when numerous wireless companies provide unlimited airtime for a relatively small monthly fee.

A. Because of wireless service costs plummeting in the last year, and as mobile phones are increasingly common, many people
B. As the cost of wireless service plummeted in the last year and as mobile phones became increasingly common, many people
C. In the last year, with the cost of wireless service plummeting, and mobile phones have become increasingly common, there are many people
D. With the cost of wireless service plummeting in the last year and mobile phones becoming increasingly common, many people are
E. While the cost of wireless service has plummeted in the last year and mobile phones are increasingly common, many people are

Can you please explain best way to solve this problem?

Thanks.

sorry, got my mistake...it should be E. "While" indicates contrast in two clauses. "with" cannot.

oops ...I was mistaken "plummeting" to be "increase", just found that it actually means decrease.
Hence, it's not contrasting to the later part of the sentence. So my answer back to D.

new word for me "plummeting" - >meaning decrease.
God, I am so poor in words ...why do GMAT use such difficult words when simple words are available like "decrease".

Have I done any SIN by being a non native speaker? ;-) ...God help me!

Why not option B. As sentence is also parallel ( Past tense)??

In D)

D. With the cost of wireless service plummeting in the last year and mobile phones becoming increasingly common, many people are

why are we using the participle - plummeting in the present tense form when the time period is last year.

B is incorrect because of missing Verb 'are'. Option B makes the sentence without any verb

For the same reason I think D is Incorrect and E should be the answer.

Sentence has 2 timeframes.
1)In last year cost of wireless service being plumment and still plummented
2)and a continous i.e mobile phones becoming cheaper.

so 'has' is required in 1 to show that cost still plummented. and the next should be continous to show the ongaoing activity.
