Abailableity of Televsion

by sumittaneja009 » Thu Dec 11, 2008 3:09 am
The increased popularity and availability of televisions has led to the decline of regional dialects, language variations which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated by geographic isolation.
(A) which originate from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(B) that originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(C) originated from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(D) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuated
(E) originating from diverse ethnic and cultural heritages and perpetuating

OA is D

Please explain why B is wrong and D is the right answer?

Crux:

D

"Orginating" and "perpetuated" are actually parallel to each other

How?

One is present particple and other is past participle

and they parallel also in meaning

"Orginating means getting new life" Beginning of life

"perpetuate means preserving from extinction ie end of life"

It looks greek when explained. But read the explanation of a similar qtn

OG 11. eg. 39

Its very much similar to "spawned" and "extending"

( spawned meant something in the past and extending meant something that still continued onto the present)

Subject-her "The increased popularity and availability" both are related to Television and not related to different things

Its a subject phrase...Subject phrases take singular verbs

Past participles are used in the Perfect tenses

For regular verb such as "walk" Past participle is formed by adding "ed" to the end

For irregular verbs e.,g. "Begin", Past participle is " Has begun"

Comprehensive list of irregular verbs is given in MG SC

Present participles- "ing"

walk-walking etc

Thanks in advance.
