Answer seems to be Dprakashchandra wrote:The value of the farming equipment manufacturer's shares have risen nearly 200 percent this year as more investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors that people will flock to buy.
A. The value of the farming equipment manufacturer's shares have risen nearly 200 percent this year as more investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors that people will flock to buy.
value (singular) requires a singular verb has.
B. The value of the farming equipment manufacturer's shares has risen nearly 200 percent this year as more investors have started to express belief that the company will make more efficient tractors and that people will flock to buy.
S-V agreement is correct (value.. has), however the parallelism expressed in the latter half makes no sense: investors have started to express belief that X and that Y. Since we have a conjunction as in the answer choice, we need an explanation for the investors belief (why the share prices would rise ? what would the people buy ?)
C. The farming equipment manufacturer's shares has risen nearly 200 percent this year because more investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors that people will flock to buy.
shares (plural) requires a plural verb have.
D. The farming equipment manufacturer's shares have risen nearly 200 percent this year as more investors have started to express belief that the company will make more efficient tractors that people will flock to buy.
Correct S-V agreement; meaning is expressed correctly after using a conjunction as. Lets keep this for now.
E. The farming equipment manufacturer's shares have risen nearly 200 percent this year in that more investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors and people will flock to buy.
Similar issue as in B.

{A} - INCORRECT; "value" doesn't go with verb "have"AbhiS wrote:I would go for E for the following reasons:
1) SV Agreement
2) Parallelism -
the company will make more efficient tractors and people will flock to buy
3) Usage of believe
Thanks
{B} - INCORRECT; Belief is singular.. so belief should be ONE
{C} - INCORRECT; "shares" & "has" SVA error
{D} - CORRECT
{E} - INCORRECT; that & that parallelism

I understand what you are trying to say with option D. Please correct me if I am wrong, when we use AND we can omit words that are implied and that is implied and the main parallelism is the company will make more efficient tractors and people will flock to buy
My other reason for choosing E over D was the word believe is better, clearer and more concise than the phrase to express belief
How can someone express belief that company will make more efficient tractors, will it not be better to say investors have started to believe that the company will make more ......
Thanks

--> Yes, "believe" word could have been better then "express belief" but that doesn't mean you can eliminate {D} .. {E} has a bigger structure issue.
E. The farming equipment manufacturer's shares have risen nearly 200 percent this year in that more investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors and people will flock to buy.
--> We cannot skip the "that and that" parallelism for clauses.. whenever we join two clauses using "And" connector and the first clause is introduced using "that", then second clause must also contain "that"; ELIMINATE

Hi Rahul,
Thanks for the explanation, but I think that you are missing something here or I am not understanding it right.
I found few articles explaining parallel-that-clauses structure with a similar type of a problem: If its not too much to ask, would appreciate if you explain me with the reference of the article. Thanks in advance.

For Connecting Independent clauses, we need to use "that"... I am not sure about the information provided in the first like you shared.
Here is the explanation for other two:
Link 2:
an increase that would amount to roughly five miles per gallon and that would represent...
-> both the underlined parts are not Independent clauses, so if we skip "that", then also it's fine
Link 3:
Among lower-paid workers, union members are less likely than nonunion members to be enrolled in lower-end insurance plans that impose stricter limits on medical services, requiring doctors to see more patients and spending less time with each
-> both the underlined parts are not Independent clauses, so if we skip "that", then also it's fine

Pay attention to MEANING as well as to grammar.AbhiS wrote:I would go for E for the following reasons:

E implies the following:
Investors have started to believe that the company will make more efficient tractors.
Investors have started to believe that people will flock to buy.
The latter statement makes no sense:
What exactly will people flock to buy?

I have one concern related to noun share and verb rise. How can it be correct to say Share have risen? Isn't the Value correct noun and not Share. Share cannot rise, but its value can.
Am I missing here something?

I, somewhat, agree with you.. because the first time i solved this question... i remember i marked {B} because of same reason. However, one problem with {B} is singular "belief"Milovan wrote:I have one concern related to noun share and verb rise. How can it be correct to say Share have risen?
