Resolve the paradox

by ankit0411 » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:53 pm
Raisins(R) are made by drying grapes(G) in the sun. Although some of the sugar in the grapes is caramelized in the process, nothing is added. Moreover, the only thing removed from the grapes is the water that evaporates during the drying and water contains no calories or nutrients. The fact that raisins contain more iron par calorie than grapes do is thus puzzling.

a. Since G are bigger than R, it takes several bunch of G to provide same amt of iron as a handful of R.
b. Caramelized sugar cannot be digested, so its calorie do not count towards the calorie contents of R.
c. The body can absorb iron and other nutrients more quickly from G because of relatively high water contents of G.
d. R, but not G are available year round, so many people get a greater share of their yearly iron from R than from G.
e. R are often eaten in combination with other iron containing foods, while G are usually eaten themselves.

Ankit,

My answer would be A. The logic being that 100 grams of grams are way less in volume than a 100 grams of raisins. Hence it takes several bunches of G to provide the same amount of iron as a handful of R.

G - water = R

In drying grapes, some of the sugar in the grapes is caramelized, but if this caramelized sugar, as per B, is not counted towards the calorie contents of R, then R will have less calorie. That explains why raisins contain more iron par calorie than grapes do.

Let me explain with maths (although it is not needed):

Let grapes contain 10 units of calorie and 6 units of iron. Iron/calorie in grapes is 6/10. In the process of drying the grapes assume 1 unit of sugar is caramelized. Then R will have 6 units of iron per 9 units of calorie ie 6/9 (because caramelized sugar doesn't count towards calorie content)

6/9 > 6/10. Ans B.

B is clear winner! Same amount of iron is available in slightly lesser Cal (original minus caramelized), so per Cal, iron content is more for R.
