recommendation letter selection

by vinviper1 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 9:22 am
Hi,

I am looking to apply to NYU Stern part-time and perhaps a few others. In terms of recommendations, does it look better to have a higher-up reommend you or someone that has known you longer or knows you better in general.

My situation. I have been at my current firm a little less than a year. For NYU, I will be using my immediate supervisor as it is required. I then can also attain a recommendation from the President of the firm if that would help. Would it matter?

In terms of my old job, I can get a recommendation from the CFO who has known me since I started there (pretty closely). Or I can get a recommendation from my immediate supervisor of 3 years and my internship at my old firm -- he is currently a VP at another firm. I still keep in touch with him -- mentor type of figure.

Thanks!

Hi Vin,
Thanks for your post. Rule of thumb with LORs is always go with people who can best speak and sell your candidacy/strengths. If your old supervisor was also a mentor, seems like he/she would be a perfect choice.

Good luck!

Quick follow up:

For schools that require two but dont limit it to just two (Stern Part-time), would it be wise if I got a recommendation from my long term mentor, my current supervisor as requried, and say the president of my current firm? Is the 3rd recommendation worth while? Thanks.

In my opinion, if they ask for two reccs, you should only provide two. You could provide the extra recommendation later in the process (if you are waitlisted).
