Recently laid off

by OptinumGmat » Thu Jan 12, 2017 7:27 am
A brief background of myself. I completed my BBA in 2012 and soon after I was selected to be part of this post-graduate finance program offered through NYC for minority students from July 2012 and the program completed in June of 2013. After the program ended up I had a flair attack from my Crohns disease and became severely underweight so I was unemployed until Jan of 2014 as I focused on getting better, I did take a temp opportunity in Oct-Nov and I won an offer in December for a consulting firm and started in Jan 2014. Now my company has been missing its earning targets and yesterday I was laid off due to budget cuts while I was going for promotion in March. Now I'm unemployed again. I was looking into applying for business school in Sept as I have started studying for the GMAT. I left on good terms and will be able to get letter of recommendations from previous managers. Now my question is what do I do now? I have two gaps in my resume. I also have an upcoming interview with a firm, but not too interested in the role.

I'm not entirely sure what to do. If I end up winning an offer should I take it even though I may not be interested in it or should I wait until I find something more aligned with my goals? But that could take awhile, even though I plan on applying to business school come this fall.

Hi Optinum,

I'm sorry to hear that. Indeed you would have to do a lot of explaining in your application, but they are all valid reasons of course. Admissions committees are certainly human too so they will understand as long as you have good reason.
As nothing is guaranteed or set in stone, I would continue with a job search and definitely go for this interview. Even by the time you actually start school if you were to be admitted, it would be quite some time away so best to find a job and keep working. Otherwise you will have a very big big gap in employment. If the job isn't so aligned with your goals though, it may not 'flow' well with your experience and/or goals and ad coms might wonder why the change. I would still go for the interview nevertheless so you can find out more about the role - keep you options open. Even if you do get it you could always continue to search for other jobs that are of more interest.

Best of luck to you,
