Choosing the Right School | US MBA

by HARII » Tue Apr 14, 2020 12:57 pm
Nationality: Indian
Age: 27

Educational Background: 4 Years; Engineering (Computers)
GPA: 7 out of 10
Work Experience: 6 Years
GRE Score: 310 (Q: 161, V:149)

Short background:
I joined an early-stage startup as soon as I graduated. I initially started off my career in recruitment and got promoted to manage the HR functions of the company. I had about 5 people reporting to me directly. However, for the last year, I shifted my focus towards finance & accounting. I wish to build my career in either finance or accounting. I have taken GRE and want to know If I have to take GMAT for my target score.

I felt I might have a decent chance in the following. Is my profile good enough make it into the following schools? If yes, what are the schools you would suggest?

University of Florida (Warrington)
Brigham Young University (Marriott)
University of Georgia (Terry)
University of Texas--Dallas
Arizona State University (W.P. Carey)
University of Rochester (Simon)
University of Wisconsin--Madison
University of Alabama (Manderson)
Texas A&M University--College Station (Mays)
University at Buffalo--SUNY

I also want to try applying for one or two of the following schools to see my chances.

University of Texas--Austin (McCombs)
University of Washington (Foster)
Indiana University (Kelley)
Georgia Institute of Technology (Scheller)

Thanks

Schools care a lot more than just GPA/GMAT/GRE, but in general in order to have a decent shot with a given application, especially coming from a competitive demographic, you want to meet or exceed the average for a school.

You listed your GRE breakout here. Did you also attempt the GMAT? The reason why I ask is that some candidates favor one exam over the other, and it’s a best practice for applicants to try both of them in an online practice test before firmly committing to one. If you haven’t yet tried the GMAT, you should attempt a practice test before submitting your GRE score -- you still have time.

Your GMAT-adjusted equivalent score is a 530. At a cursory glance, that score is lower than every school on this list. The 7/10 GPA may not be a deal-breaker depending on your undergraduate school’s ranking and reputation (for certain respected Indian universities a mid 70s/100 GPA is equivalent to an “A” or 4.0). So that said, if you went to a top Indian university, your GPA could make up for your lower-than-average GRE. If your GPA and your GMAT/GRE are *BOTH* lower than the schools average, you still could have a shot, but you’d need to come up with really watertight strategic positioning for your resumes and essays. You’ll also want to apply to as many schools as possible to maximize your odds of getting into one.

I’m intrigued by your start-up experience. That entrepreneurial avenue could indeed be a differentiating factor given what might be (on its face) a more conventional profile. If you could build that out a little further it might make for some interesting essay material. Similarly, it’s rare that admitted applicants have direct managerial experience, which you have, so you should emphasize your EQ and management potential in your essays and resume.

You don’t talk about any extracurriculars here, so I’m not sure what to make of that. Candidates who are lacking in the GPA/GRE/GMAT areas need to make up for that in other areas (extracurricular leadership and impact, high-flying career success, CFA, CPA, etc.). You are going to need to demonstrate that you have passions outside of your job and that you care about your impact on the world. Non-profit organizational involvement or civic activism to some extent is going to be a requirement on your resume. If you don’t have any of that today, you need to get some by the time you apply.

You might benefit from a free consultation with an admissions consultant regarding school selection and strategic positioning, even if you don’t end up raising your GRE/GMAT score.
