Question Or Answer Wrong ? Or me ?

by actionbasti » Thu Apr 26, 2007 10:19 pm
I have sometimes trouble understanding the question right. And the following problem is one of those: (But I really think the Answer is wrong):

An appliance store sells two size air conditioners, an 8000 BTU air conditioner for $235 and an 14000 BTU air conditioner for $465. If, during a certain sale, the store sold 3 more of the 8000 BTU models than 14000 BTU models and generated revenues of $3495, hot many air conditioners did it sell?

A. 3
B. 6
C. 9
D. 12
E. 13

So the CAT says that the answer should be C based on the following equation: 235x + 465(x + 3) = 3495 --> x = 3 --> 2x + 3 --> 9

How is that so cause, based on the questions i would write the equation:
235(x + 3) + 465(x) = 3495

(BTW: I made sure the question is copied as in the original!)

whats going on ?

As written above, something's not quite right here. What is the source for this question?

I agree with you, when I read the question I set the equation up as: (x+3)235 + 465x = 3495.

It might be that this is a typo, not sure if there is any errata available on the web or from Kaplan's publisher.

Yeah the problem with the equation/answer is that its set up backwards. Its basically saying that there were 3 more sold of the other model. Could be a typo in the actual wording of the question rather than the answer.
