by aman77 » Thu Feb 05, 2015 3:37 am
Hi All,

I am an Indian Male 23 yrs old, I scored 680 on GMAT (Q:48, V:35), I have an experience of ~ 1.5 yrs with a French MNC Alcatel Lucent,One of the top 5 in Telecom Sector. I scored 74% in Xth Standard and 88% in XIIth Standard, I am interested for the following countries USA, Canada, Australia and Singapore. What should I do to improve my profile and make my profile suitable for Good Bschools in the above mentioned Countries.

Any help will be appreciated.

\\ Thanks
Aman

What scores did you get in undergraduate? Do you have a sense of what types of programs you want to target?

Regardless, focus on:

1) Extra-curriculars: Do things that match with your profile and story, and do one or two things very well. Think quality over quantity and leadership roles
2) Work: Try to get a promotion / decent salary raise and take on managerial responsibilities wherever possible. Start to do things to impress your recommenders or take on new roles so there is content to talk about
3) GMAT: If you can improve that, depending on what schools you will target, it would be worth your time studying harder. Though this score could be fine depending on your targets. Definitely start with #1 before anything else

Hi Aman,

I agree with the feedback above. However, if you are focused on the top b-schools, specifically in the US, I would prioritize both your involvement and scoring above 700-710 on the GMAT. If you are targeting schools outside the top 10 in the US and top 20 globally, then you might be able to stick with your current score. However, do take note that you have a very common background for your demographic, so you need to push yourself to really bring out unique and defining characteristics in your application. The good news is that you're young, so you have at least a couple years to develop yourself.

Best of luck!

Hi Aman,

You need to target 700+ in GMAT if you really want to target top B-schools in US. You can still apply with your current profile to some of the good B-schools in Canada and Australia. I hope Canadian and Australian B-schools you have decent chance with your current profile. The next step for you to improve your profile is you really need to gain some work experience, improve your GMAT score and involve more in community activities, target for some professional certifications, awards and recognition. You need to build your overall profile to make it competitive. Let me know if you have any questions?

Hi Aman:

I think you need to re-take GMAT and aim for 30-50 points more to be considered serious for top programs. Can you provide details about your under-graduation, numbers and quality of the course (how difficult to get in, academic rigor)?

Good to know that you work for a leading telecom firm. It would worthwhile to focus on the quality of experience. It would be good to apply when you would have about 3 years (at start of the class) with rich experience. This would include interesting projects, assignments where you made business impact.

Can you provide more information on extra-curriculars. What passions do you have and interests? Any impact made on the college, community and organization you are involved with?
