Profile evaluation - Suitable for INSEAD?

by petur » Tue Jun 11, 2013 11:26 pm
Hi

I would like to get some feedback on my profile. I want to apply to INSEAD.

Nationality: Spanish

Academics:

Industrial Engineering Master's Degree in Mechanical-Construction GPA 7.5/10
I studied in one of the top engineering schools in Spain.

CFA Level 1 (December 2012)

GMAT: 710 (82% Quantitative / 83% Verbal)

Work Experience

5+ in Heavy Civil Construction Projects.
First 1.5 years in Spain.
Last 3.5 years in USA

The last 3.5 years in USA:

1 year in New York:
Economic and technical analysis of different projects during the bid phase. Awarded with two contract ($500 million & $1,350 million)

2.5 years in Seattle:
Project Engineer in large project ($ 1,400 M).
Implementation of the cost control procedures (reporting, work flow,...)
Quarterly economic forecast.
Adaptation of the company's Economic Planning Software to the American market.
Negotiation and supervision of subcontractors (payments, contract terms, etc)[/list]

Extra curricular activities
: I practice a lot of sports (climbing, skiing, scuba diving, soccer, tennis) but I don't belong to any club or association.

Lot of travel but only in Europe (11 countries) & USA (12 states)

I've started working on an on-line platform with a business partner but we are just starting and it will take us time to have something tangible.

Languages: Spanish (Native) English (Fluid) French (very basic)

If INSEAD is a long shot, any other options?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

With 5+ yrs. of work experience including international exposure, you are in ideal phase of your career which most of the b-school look for. You have some remarkable professional achievements with good GMAT scores. All these are crucial while writing application essays. You must also showcase leadership skills, maturity, professionalism and ability to work with others during final interviews. If you are able to skillfully frame application essays and work hard hard on interviews then you would stand a chance in b-school(s). With the given information, INSEAD should be within your reach. You may gauge your chances in b-school(s) by clicking https://goo.gl/lhc05

Let me know in case of further queries. You may PM your details for school selection or discussion in length.

    Regards
    Erina

      Hi Petur,

You have an interesting profile and a diverse set of experiences to pull from. The global component is cemented and is coveted by a school like INSEAD. On a side note, while you don't have any extracurriculars specifically, there are ways to position this coupled with your hobbies that can at the very least be seen as neutral by adcoms and potentially as a positive. It really comes down to story and there are many ways to go forward with that.

That said - why are you looking to get your MBA? I ask this because the next question is why INSEAD? Honestly speaking, INSEAD isn't a stretch for you. I'm not saying it isn't difficult to get into and that it isn't a great program, it is! But for you it's more closely aligned. Which then opens up the door to why you want an MBA, what schools are best to enable your goals, and within that subset, what is really a stretch versus not.

So the good news is INSEAD is definitely within reach. The better news is I think you're selling yourself short. I'd have to learn more about you to say that with certainty but given what you've written, I think you should broaden your school options (and stretch a little more).

      Thoughts?

Your academic background is sufficiently strong.

Within your professional experience try to tie the strength of your economic analysis to the awarding of the contract. Showcase your leadership and managerial skills within your professional experience and negotiating competencies with subcontractors beyond merely stating that you have done this.

I think you are competitive for INSEAD. What are your post-MBA goals? It would be easier to advise you on other schools with that information?

      Petur,

Un saludo desde Los Angeles. Vivi en Madrid durante 3 anos trabajando en Johnson & Johnson antes de HBS. Siempre es un placer dar consejo a los Espanoles!

Your work experience is very solid. Has it all been for the same large company? It will be important to highlight how many people have reported to you on some of the larger projects.

And your GMAT is good enough for INSEAD and balanced in terms of the splits.

Are you just considering Euro schools?
