Profile Evaluation Request

by carami10 » Wed May 09, 2018 11:09 am
Hello Everyone

I am preparing to begin applying to MBA programs this fall with intent to matriculate in the fall of 2019. Seeking advice and insights regarding my profile strength and if my school selection seems feasible. Thank you in advance!

Demographic: White, Male. My mother was born in South Africa to Portuguese parents, I don't know if that helps me at all, never really considered it until I've seen all of the forum posts regarding diversity in AdCom considerations.

GMAT: Haven't taken it yet, first one is scheduled for June 23rd. My practice exam is cause for concern for me. I scored V47 but Q21 :(
I am currently enrolled in Target Test Prep and have been going through the foundations of GMAT Math from Manhattan prep, a lot of it is shaking off the rust but I am striving to score in the mid 40s for Quant (studying ~20hrs/week currently)

Undergrad: NYU (Sports Management)
Undergrad GPA: 5.59

Total work experience: 5+ years at matriculation
Current Job : Strategic Marketing Analyst for a small/mid sized media firm in NYC. I've been here for about 3 months so far but have made an impact and feel I will get a solid recommendation if I ask in early August. I will get a glowing rec from my previous employer.

Previous Jobs:
My first job out of school was in Acquisition and Retention for the United States Olympics Committee through USA Triathlon in Colorado. I moved to Colorado to pursue rock climbing, which I fell in love with in college after a running-career ending injury. I was with USAT/USOC for one year when I was given the opportunity to start a head a very young marketing department at a large climbing facility in Colorado Springs. Being able to both work in a leadership capacity and follow my passion of rock climbing was a dream. I worked at the gym for 2 years with great success both in my position and as a climber. I wound up spending ~8 months travelling the country, working remotely for the gym, while climbing professionally in some of the US's premier rock climbing destinations. At some point during the trip I decided to refocus my efforts on my non-climbing professional career which brought me back to NYC where both my family and a large job market are located.

Extra curricular activities:
During college I was a varsity athlete on NYU's Cross-Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track teams. Went to Nationals for Cross-Country

Worked with a couple non-profits in Colorado. One was to help beautify local park, clean trails, and make sure rock faces and access were safe for the public. The other worked with alcoholics and addicts to help keep them off their vices through physical exercise (i.e. climbing) and immersion in the outdoors. It allowed me to further share my love of climbing with those who desperately needed. (Climbing saved me from a depression during college, so I've always wanted to share the power of the activity with others).

Short term goals: Transition from marketing/media into strategy consulting with a focus on marketing/media

Long term goals: CMO or VP of Marketing for a large outdoor-focused/athletics company (i.e. The North Face, Adidas, etc.)

The few school's I'm currently considering applying to:
Tuck (favorite given the location, tight-knit community, and general management focus)
Haas (perhaps a reach, but a great program with an equally excellent alumni network)
NYU Stern (back to my roots!)
Darden (another excellent program for management consulting)
These are the 4 I am considering for R1. Again, any advice, insights, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading!
