by rijul007 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 11:29 am
Hi,
I am a fresher. I wish to apply for MiM program in London Business School, HEC Paris or IE.
I wish to know about my chances for getting into these colleges.

GMAT score - 720.
Academic profile-
Engineering in Computer Science from Apeejay Colege of Engineering. (a very average college)
I dont know how to convert the percentage to GPA, but I am pretty sure it would turn out to be around 2.7 - 2.9, which is very low.

Co-curriculum profile -
-Pursued Sales and Marketing certification course from IIT Delhi
-National delegate at 1st International Youth Forum in India
-National IT Aptitude Test-- 97%ile
-AMCAT, which is an employability test, scores as follows
English - 93%ile, Quant - 99.4%ile, Logical reasoning - 99.7%ile and Computer programming - 95%ile.
-eLitmus, also an employability test, 97.96%ile
-social media promoter for a company called Fveda
-am in my college football team, won a couple of tournaments
-completed airtel delhi half marathon twice
-I have been in the organizing committee of a various events in college, such as, Athletic meets, college fests... also a member of a committee called Cryptex in college, we were responsible in organizing various technical workshops, seminars and competitions in college

Can you please give me your opinions whether i stand any chance in LBS, HEC and IE?
What I can do to improve my profile in an year, as I am planning to apply next year for the batch that starts in 2014?
Also, suggest me some top colleges where I can apply with my profile.
Should I retake the GMAT to improve my chances?

MiM will be more interested in your academic performance and GMAT than your Work Experience. You should have a shot at your target schools, but due to your low GPA, you may want to broaden your target list to more schools in the top 20 to be safe. A better GMAT will likely not help you much since your GMAT is already so high. You might consider enrolling in a class or two part time and getting high grades to prove your aptitude and also your dedication to an academic path.

Hi Bryant,

Thanks for your reply.
I would like to know more about the extra part time classes. What kind of courses do you suggest I should go for? Do you know of any reputed institutions where I can do these courses online/distance learning?

Thanks

The problem with distance learning for this kind of pursuit is that good schools will discount the effort. If you were going for the MBA, they would not care as much, but with pure Masters degrees, they may be less impressed with this kind of approach. Better to take a course from a reputed school if you can pull it off.

Hey Bryant,
I have been looking out for courses at schools here. I found a 1-year long course on Banking and Finance in one of the reputed colleges of Delhi University. Should I go for it?

I also did a short term course on Sales and Marketing at IIT, Delhi in June. It had a competitive entrance exam which included Apti test, written test and an interview, and I ranked 1st in it. But, this course was non-graded, I just received a Certificate of completion for attending this course. Does this have any value?

I have some queries regarding LORs.
I'll be applying next year, so when would be the right time to start arranging the LORs? And, how many do i need to show to these schools?

Those courses sound good--much better options than distance learning. As for LORs, you should give them plenty of time to thoughtfully prepare your recommendation and make sure they:

1.Review a copy of your personal statement or application essays so that the letter of recommendation can dovetail with--not conflict with or duplicate--the rest of the application.

2. Ask you to supply additional information like a resume.

3. Describe your qualifications for comparing you to other applicants. ex: I have been teaching for twenty years and have advised approximately 450 students on independent research projects over the last five years. I have personally supervised ten interns every summer for the last five years plus worked with over two hundred college graduates in my capacity as trainer for Big Bank Corp.

4. Discuss how well they know you and for how long/in what capacity. ex: I was able to get to know Mr. Doe because he made it a point to attend two of my sections every week when only one was required. or: Ms. Smith reported directly to me for two years prior to her well-deserved promotion to the position of Senior in our Big Six Accounting Firm.

5. Choose two to three qualities that they observed in your performance. ex: Jane has a rare blend of top writing and interpersonal skills. or: The combination of tenacity, analytical abilities, and good communications skills found in Mr. Doe is truly unique.

6.In discussing those qualities, make sure they support their statements with specific instances in which you demonstrated those attributes. They should be as concrete and detailed as possible:
He is the only student I ever had who came to all my office hours as part of a relentless, and ultimately successful, drive to master financial theory. He was one of just ten percent in the class to receive an A. or Because of Jane's writing skills, I didn't hesitate to ask her to write a report which was used by our PAC as the basis for a major policy statement. Congressman X eventually used the statement, based on Jane's sophisticated 20-page analysis of Middle East politics, in lobbying for increased funding.

7.Try to quantify your strengths or rank you vis a vis other applicants that they have observed. such as: He was in the top 10% of his class. or: She has the best analytical skills of any person her age that I have ever supervised.

8.Avoid generalities and platitudes.

9. Include some mild criticism, typically the flip-side of a strength. examples:
The only fault I have encountered in him is his retiring nature. His modesty sometimes hides a young man of remarkable strength and broad interests.
Occasionally, her fortitude and persistence can turn into stubbornness, but usually her good nature and level-headedness prevail.

10. Discuss your potential in your chosen field. ex: I enthusiastically recommend Mr. Doe to your business school/graduate school. This well-rounded student will be a fine businessperson, real estate developer, etc.. .
or:
With her exceptional leadership, writing, and quantitative skills, Ms. Smith will be an outstanding strategic consultant and a credit to the business school she attends.

hope this helps!

Hey again Bryan,

Thanks a lot for that thorough post regarding LORs. There are lots of helpful tips in there.

I am also confused about the percentage to gpa conversion. I have tried looking up over the internet about the conversion, but I didn't get any proper technique. Some sources say that I don't need to convert it, schools do that for me. But, I wish to know what it turns out to be on the GPA scale.

My UG score is 64%. My class toppers score range from 70-75%. A senior told me that my gpa would easily be closer to 3.5, as 60+ is distinction.
Anyway, can you give me a rough range where my score may lie on the GPA scale? And tell me, is it good, bad or ugly?

Thanks :)

Hi Bryan!

I would also like to know about my chances for the mim at HEC and LSE. I am a double major in English (BA) and Psychology Neuroscience (BA and BS, took the reqs for both), I have one year of experience as a marketing coordinator and a marketing analyst/sales administrator (I have two jobs), one job is at a large international company. I have a 3.95 GPA, three very good LOR's, and I am a finalist for a Fulbright grant (I have not found out about that yet though). I have stats exp. research exp., was in the honors college on a partial academic scholarship, and published instructors materials for a textbook. Ummmm other info A's in all stats classes and Labs and math classes. MY GRE is 164 V, 5 AWA, but a measley 148 in Quant :(. I also ran the sales and production of a magazine at school as an intern. Do you think considering everything else I
'd still have a shot?

P.S. I apologize for referencing my GRE scores as I know it's the GMAT and not the GRE that you typically discuss, but I couldn't find info like this elsewhere.

Thanks a million,

Nicki

Nicki yes I think you would have a shot. Your grades in quant courses should balance out your GRE quant score and your work experience is a plus since it's generally not required for MIM.

Mrunal-

You would likely fare better in a management career with the MBA vs. MIM or MSM degree. The MBA is much more widely recognized as the "standard" for management, where the other degrees often serve as foundations for academic careers. In order to be eligible for top MBA programs, however, it has become increasingly important to have the "whole package," which would include a better GMAT score (700+), as well as 3-5 years of increasingly responsible work experience at a minimum. Top candidates will also have some pretty deep community involvement and that something "extra" in their experience to differentiate themselves from the average bear.

Hi !

I am a South Asian fellow aiming to get enrolled in the 2016 batch of LBS MiM program. I do consider my command in English to be fairly good, still I am trying to improve in it and I'm also preparing for the TOEFL to prove my proficiency in it. But what I doubt is that my ECs and my academic performances might create a hindrance into my admission in LBS. Below is the description of my academic performances and ECs
My GMAT score:710.

1.) I am going to graduate in May, 2015. I am pursuing a degree in Bachelors of technology in Electronics and Communications Engineering. My current CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is 6.353/10. I am aware that the LBS requires an undergraduate degree equivalent to UK 2:1 or above. A UK 2:1 means 60% or above as far as I know. I would really appreciate it if you can confirm this to me whether I satisfy this criterion.

2.) I also did my summer internship from an organization which is an official business partner of VMware,IBM, and Microsoft.

3.) I recently got a job of a Technical Job Recruiter in an Indian subsidiary of a company head quartered in Somerset,New Jersey (U.S).

4.) I am not sure about what to mention in the Extra Curriculars. But these are the things that I did when I was in college.
* I've got a certification that says I'm a VMware Certified Profssional in Data Center Virtualization. (VCP 5 - DCV). I really love to learn about Virtualization.
* I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional as well .(2 MOS (Excel,Powerpoint) + 1 MTA (Networking Fundamentals)).
MOS - Microsoft Office Specialist Certification.
MTA - Microsoft Technical Associate certification.
*I'm learning to play guitar and I'm also preparing for the Trinity college music exam (grade 1) from a good instructor.
* I do administer a facebook page.
* I'm also a fitness freak.
Now here is my question :
What are my chances to get an admission into the LBS MiM (2016) if I clear the TOEFL,Trinity (grade1), gain an year of experience in the company I recently got placed and with the above mentioned academic performances and ECs ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Dev,

Well lets start with your strengths

Certifications show you can go beyond what you are required to, in the pursuit of excellence.
Your hobbies are great, but you have to show how they add concrete value to your profile, only then it counts.
Work experience is good, the one year experience will really help. Though again you have to show what skills you gained from that.

The fact you may have been working with international colleagues at your work place, will suggest you are open minded and have experience of working in international teams.

The weaknesses may be:

A weak CGPA, you will have to compensate for this via showing you have other skills.

Your organization may have strong ties to big companies, but may be unknown names themselves, to the admission committee so you to make extra effort to show the valuable skills you learned and how you interacted with the big companies you mentioned.

Then for LBS the competition is really high, and you will be competing with people with very strong extra curricular and credentials, so that may be a problem.

I would suggest you to aim for a 700+ GMAT and pay extra attention to your essays and LOR's making sure they bring out the best in you.
