Profile Evaluation - Berkeley EWMBA

by veljibear » Sat Oct 24, 2015 11:38 am
Thanks in advance for your evaluation!

Age:30
Occupation: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Number of Years of Work Experience: 8
Undergraduate Institution: Harvey Mudd College (very difficult engineering program)
Undergrad GPA: 2.9
2-year GPA: 3.1
GMAT: 650 (Q36/V41)

Strong recommendations, including an alumnae of the program.
Strong story of career advancement, awards, leadership.

Short-Term Goals: Stay at my current job, but move up as a R&D manager/director
Long-Term Goals: Entrepreneurship, founding my own company

My main concern is that I appear to below below average on GPA and GMAT. Can't do much about the GPA, but if I apply round 2, I can retake the GMAT and try to get that math score up. I would also think it's a red flag for an engineer to have a low quant score, even though it's two very different types of math.

EDIT: Are there other programs I should be considering? I picked Berkeley because I live in Silicon Valley and it's convenient and well-ranked, but I'm open to other suggestions.

I think your immediate concern is correct. Focus on getting the GMAT score up if you can, especially on the quant side. The GPA will always be a weakness for you, especially as you consider the higher profile schools. Basically you need to convince adcom you have the aptitude for success, as well as the motivation re: your academics. I do believe there are other part time / emba options in the Valley area, but I am not the most familiar with them. Wherever you go, in the area, you will likely be in the classroom with smart engineers. cheers, alex
